News: Soil erosion threatens global food security

A new study recently published in the journal Science says in many places soils are being lost faster than they are naturally being made. At the same time increased pressure on farmland from crops for non-food uses such as  biofuels may create a shortage of inorganic fertiliser. The paper urges more efficient food distribution and better soil management.

News: Community Food and Health (Scotland) Funding Opportunities

Community Food and Health (Scotland) funding opportunities for 2015 will open on 12 June. This year they are looking for groups involved in food and health activities in low-income communities. Reports: Good Food on the Public Plate Evaluation Report

This report details the outcome of the evaluation of phase two of the Good Food on the Public Plate project. This evaluation was run by F3: The local food consultants and found that without exception, participants welcomed the support the project provided. They also found that the project targets were very challenging but that there has undoubtedly been a positive, tangible contribution to increasing the level of sustainable consumption by target public sector organisations.

Blog: MPs champion our calls to invest in local food infrastructure

Last week, a well-attended Westminster Hall debate full of rich discussion from across political parties and front benches, agreed the motion to support local food infrastructure. Hosted by Peter Aldous, MP for Waveney, there was a strong turnout from across the political parties and across the UK, all of whom strongly showed their interest in supporting better and fairer to routes to market for UK farmers. Sustain and our alliance will seek to build on this momentum to secure greater support for local food systems across Parliament.
